Raincoat made from 100% recycled plastic bottles

A million plastic bottles are bought around the world every minute and the number will jump another 20% by 2021, creating an environmental crisis some campaigners predict will be as serious as climate change… Fewer than half of the bottles bought in 2016 were collected for recycling and just 7% of those collected were turned into new bottles. Instead most plastic bottles produced end up in landfill or in the ocean. The Guardian

Which is why I’m particularly excited to share with you these beautiful coats by Lea & Jojo that are not only non-toxic (no PHTALATES, nor PVC, nor PFOA’S / PFO’S, nor AZO DYES, nor NONYPHENOL ETHOXYLATES), but are also made form 100% recycled bottles!

On my search for non-toxic children ware the hardest one was water proof coat and pants. While there are plenty options out there, most of them are heavily treated with formaldehydes and other toxic chemicals. I even contacted some of the brands asking if they could confirm no formaldehyde treatment of their children jackets and was told that they couldn’t make such claim. Very sad indeed.

And then I discovered these very special children coats by Lea & Jojo. At first I was delighted to find an OEKO TEX certified rain gear at last. AS mentioned above, the jackets contain no PHTALATES, nor PVC, nor PFOA’S / PFO’S, nor AZO DYES, nor NONYPHENOL ETHOXYLATES and are tested by internationally recognized laboratories like SGS.

But then I discovered that these jackets are made from 100% Recycled plastic bottles! How incredible is that?

The fabric is very soft and feels nothing like rubber or other synthetic fabrics. The ouster shell has an inner lining as well. And every little detail from zipper to little clips is just beautiful.

Plastic pollution is real

Sadly, plastic pollution is all too real. Even with our best efforts to recycle many cities in US offer none or very limited recycling programs. And some countries don’t have a recycling program all together. Single use plastic became a real plague to our oceans covering beaches and even worse making its way into marine animals and birds leading them to die of starvation.

It is estimated that globally we use a million plastic bottles per minute! And that 91% of all plastic is not recycled. Plastic bottles are commonly made from the plastic known as PET – pluethylene terephthalate, which takes about 400 year to decompose (source article).

From plastic bottles to lovely coats!

Which is why these beautiful coats from Lea & Jojo are so special! These could have been the plastic bottles that pollute our beautiful beaches and oceans. Instead they were turned into most wonderful and softest coats for little kids. Goes to show what technology is capable of when put to good use!

All of the shell and coat’s lining fabrics are certified GLOBAL STANDARD RECYCLED and are made from 100 % recycled plastic bottles. The rib is 100% GOTS certified cotton. Take a look at this page with thorough details on all the materials used in their coats.

Take a look at their latest collection of prints and colors. They also offer lovely organic cotton pom-pom infinity scarfs!

P.S. for extra warmth we pair our Lea & Jojo coat with the organic wool fleece jacket from Engle. Pure perfection! 🙂
