Autumn books, part 1:
Books by the magical Elsa Beskow

Woody, Haze and Little Peep by Elsa Beskow

This weekend we are having our first cold weather here in Colorado’s Front Range. No frost yet (whew!), but rather cool nights. So the trees turned color everywhere you look to most beautiful jewel tones. As much as I miss summer already I can’t deny of how beautiful this time of year is. Simply breathtaking!

And while browsing Instagram I’ve been seeing some beautiful posts about fall books, so I got inspired to feature some of our books that are themed around autumn. And the first post in this series is about our latest new book — the stunning “Woody, Hazel and Little Pip” by the extraordinary and magical Elsa Beskow. And I also thought the “Children of the Forest” was very fitting here as well, as even though it is not strictly about fall, it is about seasons and it is another gorgeous book by my beloved Elsa Beskow.

So here are just a few pictures I took to share with you just how stunning they are! I highly recommend them as the stories are also absolutely lovely. Please note that these books come as large format books and mini books. I highly recommend to get the large ones, as you really get to appreciate the beauty of illustrations. See below the list of our favorite online stores where you can find these books in both formats.

Where to buy:

As always I advocate for supporting small business and not Amazon or other large chains. Elsa Beskow usually is always available at one these wonderful stores who sell many beautiful things for children. I like to support them all and this time I ordered ours from Nest in Canada.

Just remember to check the format. The mini versions are too small in my option, but if you find them used on Thrift Books they could cost as little as $4. The large format books are pricey, but simply breathtaking!

Woody, Hazel and Little Pip

Like all Elsa Beskow stories we read this one is full of beautiful and magical forest creatures and their little adventures.

This story is about an adventure of two little acorn children Woody and Little Pip who were sent on an errand to collect acorns by their mother. But as Woody and Little Pip were riding on the oak leaves a wind blew them away and they landed amidst some gnomes. Meantime mama Acorn gets a visit from her friend Mrs. Hazelnut and two of her little children. But the boys are still not back home and mama Acorn starts to get worried. Then Mr. Squirrel who stops by offers his help to find the boys. Unseen by everyone Little Hazel (Mrs’s Hazelnut little daughter) tags along with Mr. Squirrel and has an adventure of her own. The story ends with a beautiful fall celebration with songs, dance and great food beneath the oak tree.

Children of the Forest

This beautiful and wonderful book follows a family of little forest people who live under a pine tree in a beautiful forest. The mama and papa have 4 children — 2 boys and 2 girls. The story follows little children and their adventures though out the seasons. During warm summer nights they love to spend time by a pond and play with their frog friends. Once during blueberry picking they run into a troll! As the summer nears the end the family needs to prepare for the winter and so starts their harvest of berries, mushrooms and also feather grass to make soft and warm winter clothes and blankets. Comes the fall children start at their school with wise Ms. Owl where they learn all sorts of forest wisdom. The book ends as the Spring is back in the forest. And as little flowers are re-appearing everywhere and natures awakens the little family welcomes an addition of their own!
